The realities of boundary-setting at work

Setting boundaries at work is crucial for maintaining a healthy and productive professional environment. Boundaries help establish clear expectations, roles, and responsibilities, contributing to effective teamwork and individual performance. They foster a sense of respect and professionalism, preventing potential conflicts and misunderstandings among colleagues. Moreover, well-defined boundaries contribute to a better work-life balance, reducing the risk of burnout and promoting overall employee well-being.

However, setting boundaries at work can be challenging for several reasons. One challenge arises from the blurred lines between personal and professional life, especially in today's interconnected world. Technology enables constant connectivity, making it harder for individuals to detach from work outside regular hours. Additionally, power dynamics, and fear of judgment or the desire to please colleagues and superiors can make employees hesitant to establish clear limits, leading to overcommitment and increased stress levels.

Boundaries are a crucial part of self-care. Leaders who model setting, holding, and respecting healthy boundaries play a large part in creating psychologically healthy and safe workplaces.

The Mental Health Commission of Canada has identified 13 factors of Psychologically Safe & Healthy Workplaces. Organizations who put them into effect can empower their workers to develop true work-life balance - leading to increased productivity, motivation, and engagement at work.
