Emotional Regulation in a Digital World

Screens and mobile devices have become a huge part of our lives.

They're part of our work, and of our social and home lives. Often, we turn to digital media to distract ourselves from stress or to "decompress". But turning to screens often doesn't reduce stress. In fact, the stress of using screens gets stored in our bodies - leaving us feeling tired, agitated and burnt out.

Since screens aren't going away, we need a toolbox of other strategies to help manage our stress and emotions. We need to make mindful decisions about device use. And we need effective ways to remove physical stress from our bodies.

This interactive session is applicable for both youth and adult audiences, and will leave participants with immediate relief.

* The workshop for youth audiences is titled, "Stressed Out and OK".  

Learning Objectives:

  • How stress impacts us, and the effects of not releasing it
  • The stress response - why it leads us to reach for our phones when life becomes overwhelming
  • Understand how screens contribute to stress levels in the body
  • How devices can be used mindfully
  • *Youth audiences will also learn how the developing adolescent brain is impacted by screens

  • Understanding toxic stress
  • Mindfulness, deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, body awareness, and sensory activities to release stress
  • Develop your personal stress recovery plan for any environment
  • Further resources for times when you need more support

Additional Information:

  • This session has been developed for any audience
  • This workshop is highly interactive as participants learn different strategies to physically reduce stress.  To get the most out of the session, enough space is needed for participants to move around the room. Comfortable clothing is recommended
  • The activities practiced in this session are not limited to able-bodied persons
  • Standard length is 60-75 minutes
  • This session is available for virtual or for in-person delivery
  • Client will be responsible for speaker travel costs, plus a per diem over and above the speaker fee
