Session Details

Most communication breakdowns don’t happen because people don’t care.
They happen because we’re running on patterns and habits we didn’t choose.

Collaborative Communication is a practical, engaging 2-hour online workshop that helps participants notice and interrupt common communication and listening habits that quietly create disconnection – especially when emotions enter the room.

Grounded in principles of Nonviolent Communication (NVC), this session invites participants to become more aware of how workplace culture, schooling, and “professional” norms have shaped the way they listen, respond, and speak under stress. Many of these habits are automatic, well-intended, and surprisingly ineffective.

Rather than teaching participants how to manage emotions, this workshop reframes emotions as useful signals  indicators that a habitual pattern is being activated. Participants learn how to recognize these cues in themselves and others, pause with intention, and respond in ways that increase understanding rather than escalation.

The focus is not on fixing conversations or memorizing new strategies & scripts, but on making small, meaningful shifts that help people feel more present, more grounded, and more likely to understand and be heard.

PLEASE NOTE: Completion Certificates for 2 hours of professional development will be provided upon request. Please see FAQ below for additional information!

Who Should Attend

  • Experienced People Leaders: Add to your already plentiful toolkit with new ideas & strategies.
  • Future & Emerging Leaders: Learn how to inspire and lead teams effectively.

Session Outline

In this workshop participants will explore how to:

  • Recognize (often well-intended!) listening and communication habits that unintentionally create disconnection
  • Notice emotional signals that indicate tension, misunderstanding, or shutdown
  • Interrupt reactive patterns and respond with greater clarity and intention
  • Use simple language shifts that support understanding and collaboration
  • Stay more present and steady when conversations start to feel uncomfortable

This is a highly interactive session that blends reflection, real-world examples, and practical tools. The tone is supportive, relatable, and refreshingly human – creating space for insight, skill-building, and the occasional “oh… that’s what I’ve been doing!” moment.

While this workshop can be taken on its own, participants get the most value when they have a foundation in nervous-system regulation. We recommend The Fundamental Building Blocks of Trusting Relationships self-directed online course as a helpful precursor.

An option to add it to your registration will be offered at checkout.

Jill McPherson

Jill (she/her) brings nearly three decades of experience as a public elementary school educator, alongside a long-standing commitment to mental health and communication work in her community. Midway through her career, she began formal training in Nonviolent Communication, a shift she describes as one that “made me love my job again.” Through this work, Jill transformed how she listened, responded, and navigated conflict, and began integrating collaborative communication practices into her professional life.

As her practice deepened, Jill became especially skilled at helping people move out of inherited “power over” communication patterns and into more collaborative, trust-building ways of relating. When a professional transition no longer aligned with her values, she stepped beyond the classroom to bring this work to a broader audience.

Today, Jill partners with leaders, teams, and organizations to build trust, navigate conflict, and create cultures where people feel safe to show up fully. Her work focuses on practical, human-centered communication skills that reduce friction, ease burnout, and turn challenging moments into opportunities for clarity and connection.

What People Are Saying About Jill's Work

Working with Jill has been an absolute delight! Her advice is exceptional, and her passion for empowering teams is truly inspiring. I highly recommend her services to other organizations, and I'm confident they will benefit just as much as we have.
